What do we want to see in 2022 for cyclists in Drogheda?

1. The speedy completion of the active travel routes…..

We want to create a culture shift towards cycling in Drogheda and the Active Travel Routes are part of that.

2. …and plans developed for more travel routes around the town.

As welcome as they are (and the Active Travel routes are very welcome, well done Louth County Council) they are just the start of the change that Drogheda needs. The future for short trips is the bicycle. A priority is safe cycling infrastructure around the schools in the town.

3. More raised footpaths around town

This is not a cycling specific piece of infrastructure but at Drogheda Cycling we believe in shared space. We believe that where pedestrians have to cross the road the road itself should be raised to the footpath level (creating a de facto speed bump). Slowing down vehicular traffic benefits everyone in Drogheda – pedestrians, cyclists and other car users. Change the culture through infrastructure.

 

4. More covered bicycle parking spaces

5. Real progress made on the Boyne Greenway from Drogheda to Navan.

The Boyne Greenway refers to the planned greenway along the banks of the Boyne from Drogheda to Navan and on to Trim. When one considers the wealth of attractions along the route (Oldbridge House, the megalithic tombs at Brú na Bóinne, Slane Castle, the Navan Ramparts, Trim Castle) it is obvious it could be a gamechanger for tourism and even commuting in the North East.

6. Real progress made on the greenway from Drogheda to Mornington

Who wouldn’t like to cycle to the beach and home again safely and comfortably?
